Financials stocks in the S&P 500 are not only down since the start of they year, they've underperformed the broad S&P 500.
Bruce Van Saun, CEO of Citizens Financial Group (CFG) , which went public in 2014, is surprised by the performance given the recent Federal Reserve rate hikes and tax cuts - two tailwinds for banks.
Van Saun sees a few catalysts for the sector this year.
"I think another good quarter of earnings, a strong outlook for the second half of the year and if we start to see a little more loan growth, that should bode well for good second half stock performance in banks," he said in an interview with TheStreet.
