Strong earnings from Dow components Caterpillar (CAT) , McDonald's (MCD) and 3M (MMM) were on track to push the blue-chip index higher after a 0.23% decline on Monday.
John Eade, CEO of Argus Research, was pleased to see companies raising their fourth quarter outlooks.
Eade also pointed to the "buy on the dip strategy," which has been in focus throughout 2017 as volatility dips to multi-decade lows.
