Sheryl Sandberg is speaking out after Facebook (FB) allowed advertisers to target users who identified themselves with terms like "Jew-hater."
In a Facebook post, she said "The fact that hateful terms were even offered as options was totally inappropriate."
The story made national headlines following a report by the non-profit investigative group ProPublica.
Facebook has since removed the offensive terms from ad targeting.
Sandberg also promised that Facebook would tighten its enforcement of "anything that directly attacks people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender or gender identity, or disabilities or diseases."
She also promised that Facebook is adding more oversight, both from humans and through automated systems.
