American and United Airlines Borrow From Spirit's Flight Plan

Traditional airlines are cutting some of their offered amenities to compete with the fares offered by ultra-low-cost carriers.

In the growing effort to compete with ultra-low-cost carriers that include Spirit (SAVE) and Frontier, American Airlines (AAL) rolled out a basic economy fare on March 1 and United (UAL) will follow suit on April 18. Delta (DAL) first offered the fare in 2013. The basic fare abandons many of the amenities associated with these legacy airlines including assigned seats and seat upgrades.
