January was an overall down month for U.S. car sales, with the major automakers all reporting declines. Ford (F) said sales of its cars and trucks fell 0.6% in January. That would have been steeper if it wasn't for sales gains in SUVs and trucks. General Motors (GM) sales dropped 3.8% last month, and both Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) and Toyota's (TM) sales fell 11%.
January's numbers come after strong sales in December.
