NerdWallet's annual household debt survey found that the average household owes $132,529, including mortgage debt. Total credit card debt is at $747 billion, up $33 billion. Student loan debt is at $1.28 trillion, up $76 billion. Auto loan debt is at $1.14 billion, up $90 billion.
Other costs are squeezing households. The consumer price index for medical costs increased by 57%, and food and beverage prices increased by 36% between 2003 and 2016.
Median household income has grown 28%, from $43,318 to $56,578, from 2003 to 2016.
