Today's Trades

As I suggested, re-entered my AAPL short at $126.72. I have added to my LNC, MET and CMCSA shorts as well. All small.

My Miscellaneous Morning Musings

I expressed in "Staying Real...And Honest" the basis for my short-term wiggles in the market. In would continue to short or sell rallies and I expect the January lows to be tested, but not immediately, but rather in a jagged zigzag manner that provi...

Trade Updates

If there is a whoosh lower this afternoon, I plan to take off my SPY puts and book a profit. My other "Trade of the Week," is Lincoln National (LNC) short. The stock is now down by $2/share since Monday and while I have no plans to cover, those that...

Keep an Eye on Narrowing Leadership (Part Deux)

I want to repeat some of my last post yesterday (and add some comments to it). The market's leadership has been narrowing for some time. That (combined with the widening chasm between stock prices and the real economy), form the basis, in part, for ...

Trade of the Week

I am making short Lincoln National (LNC) ($58.58) my Trade of the Week. As I mentioned in my sector analysis after the FOMC statement, the life insurance stocks' currently heady valuations (against private market value) and lower rates for longer (w...

The Sector Influence of the Fed

I wanted to discuss the possible short-term sector influence of the Fed's dovish statement yesterday. But, first, to reiterate, I believe the initial market euphoria will reverse or quiet down. Second, the Fed's dovish policy will continue to disadv...

A Portfolio Update

I made no changes to my portfolio Friday. I am cautious on the market's outlook, as I believe the market has climaxed and is in a topping process; I remain net short stocks and bonds. As I wrote last week on stocks and bonds, I am at the polar oppos...

Trade Updates

I am bidding below the market for more Potash (POT) and Oaktree Capital (OAK). I am offering above the market to short more Lincoln National (LNC), MetLife (MET) and Microsoft (MSFT). I live at $20.50 on the buyside for Altisource Residential (RESI)...

Making Some Trades Today

I added small to Altisource Residential (RESI) at $20.57. I added small to these shorts:  Lincoln National (LNC), $58.07; MetLife (MET), $51.56; and iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB), $341.35.

Adding to Best Ideas Shorts

I am expanding the short side of my Best Ideas List with the addition of Lincoln National (LNC) and MetLife (MET) this morning (at last sale). The shares have responded positively to the 50 basis point rise in the 10-year U.S. note yield. As a resul...

Mr. Market Is Happy; I Remain Bearish

"It might seem crazy what I'm about to say Sunshine she's here, you can take a break I'm a hot air balloon that could go to space With the air, like I don't care baby by the way." -- Pharell Williams, Happy Like the Pharell Williams song, Mr. Market...

LNC's Beat Is a Miss

In the life insurance space, Lincoln National Corporation (LNC) reported a near $0.20 beat, but all of the beat was a recapture from the reinsurance subsidiary. Also, the company's tax rate was lower than expected. Comparing "apples to apples," LNC'...

Bottom-Fish Banks? Buy Yahoo!?

I have received numerous e-mails in the last week regarding the potential for bottom fishing in the bank sector. I would not do so. The banking  industry faces substantive net interest margin pressures, weakening loan demand and the favorable five-y...

Covering MET and LNC

Houskeeping items. I have covered my MetLife (MET) ($50.20) and Lincoln National (LNC) ($53.70) for gains.

Best Ideas Reshuffle

I am making several changes in my Best Ideas list. Given the uncertainty (and market reaction, which leads me to stop some of the losses) caused by the settlement decision of New York State's DFS, it is hard to justify ASPS and OCN inclusion in the ...

Pressing a Pair of Shorts

Pressing MetLife (MET) and Lincoln Financial (LNC) shorts in here.

Clearing the Air

I am down to a relatively low aggregate gross long exposure. To clarify an earlier post: I am down to a relatively low aggregate gross long exposure now. As to individual longs: I have full-sized positions in closed-end municipal bond funds, medium-...

Insurance Shorts

Last week I added to my MetLife (MET) and Lincoln National (LNC) shorts. Seems to be that this is the ideal setting (low rates, vulnerable equities) for these shorts.

Life Insurance Stocks

Are at risk. As mentioned earlier, life insurance stocks (which are way overbought) are at risk in an extended period of low interest rates, as their re-investment opportunities are limited/reduced. I added to LNC and MET shorts on Wednesday.

Today's Trades

Today's trades recap. I added to the following shorts: LNC $57.45, MET $55.79,  IWM $118.19,  AAPL $118 68, CAT $105.90 and JPM $60.30.  I am still bidding for NWBI and OAK.

Beefing Up Some More Shorts

MetLife and Lincoln, to be specific. With the consistent drop in yields on U.S. Treasury bonds, I am adding to my MetLife (MET) and Lincoln National (LNC) shorts today.

Added to 2 Shorts

I have added to my shorts in MetLife (MET) at $54.99 and Lincoln National (LNC) at $56.69.

My Weightings

A quick look at my holdings. At the suggestion of several subscribers, I have agreed to put weightings on my individual holdings going forward. I forgot to do it this morning on companies mentioned today, so here's a quick update. Small: Ocwen (OCN)...

Shorting a Couple of Life Insurers

This will be a challenging milieu for them. I am expanding my short exposure into individual stocks today. First stop: MetLife (MET) at $54.60 and Lincoln National (LNC) at $56.15. Life insurers will be challenged by this environment of low interest...

Housekeeping Items

Covering several and closing out of one.  I covered some MetLife (MET) and Lincoln National (LNC) and closed out my Coca-Cola (KO) investment short this morning.  I also covered my bank hedge (JPMorgan Chase (JPM) short).  Risk control purposes.

This Morning's Market Setup

Where it began. "People don't want to think. And the deeper they get into trouble, the less they want to think. But by some sort of instinct, they feel that they ought to and it makes them feel guilty. So they'll bless and follow anyone who gives th...

No Time to Panic

That time has come and gone. The time to panic out of stocks was at The Ali Blah Blah Top -- not now. Reward vs. risk is beginning to improve. I have covered some more of my life insurers shorts.

The Morning Market Setup

Buy the rips, sell the dips. The rundown: U.S. futures are gapping higher   after yesterday's schmeissing . (S&P 500 futures are +11 and Nasdaq futures are +29 handles). Europe is broadly lower ¿ down by about -0.60%. Japan is -2.38% after Monday's ...
