We got something concrete out of China at last and it is big: a death sentence for a fentanyl smuggler and life sentences for two colleagues.
It might seem like small potatoes for some - like some moron twitter people whom I have had to block - but this is precisely what Peter Navarro, the man in charge of trade talks has been calling for as a sign of good will.
Someone today accused me of being part of the mainstream media but only a non-mainstream media person would recognize the importance of these convictions by what no doubt was a kangaroo star chamber. A harder line person than I would say, wait a second, Jim, the harshest one came with a two-year stay of execution but so it's all phony to which I say, "do you demand the electric bleachers here?"
Another cohort of critical souls points out that President Trump is giving away the store to have the meetings. I point out if the store is to gradually lower sky high tariffs then giveth all you want. The real sign of capitulation is China doing exactly what the hated Navarro demanded as a precondition of the talks. The bogus poultry band lift that the Chinese are touting doesn't do it. I say bogus because they already promised the U.S. this "gift" before and didn't deliver.
Why are there so many doubters of progress in the trade talks? A big one is the on-again-off-again nonsense about when and where an agreement could be signed. The reason why I don't trust it is the mainstream media gets its leaks from either the Communist Chinese - who, somehow are regarded as reliable sources, or from Secretary Mnuchin who is a relative free trader, not a fair trader.
I care more about on the record sources, even if they are tainted, on the record sources like Yu Haibing, deputy secretary general of the China National Narcotics Control Commission, who called U.S. help "limited" in rounding up Chinese smugglers.
"This further demonstrates the Chinese government's' consistent attitude of zero tolerance toward drug crimes," Haibing told Bloomberg."This case has nothing to do with the trade war." Wow can you have more lies in a paragraph?
First, there's nothing the U.S. can do to crack down on Chinese dealers. They are in China for heaven's sakes. We have no reciprocity. This isn't Mexico. Second, the application of the law has been totally inconsistent when it comes to exporting fentanyl to America, which I almost regard as a primary way to balance trade, to use Chinese doublespeak. Finally, this has everything to do with the trade war. Everything. Because Navarro and President Trump have literally over and over again said there must be a sign of good faith.
This is it.
I believe that the disinformaton on these talks from both the Chinese and American leakers has played havoc with the stock market.
I like to get it right.
You just got it right.
