My single best piece of advice for traders who are struggling with this brutal market is to sell something. It doesn't matter what it is or whether you think it is a fantastic stock. Just hit that sell button and dump something.
There are two reasons why this can be helpful.
First, it is a way to eliminate the feeling that you are powerless to deal with the market. There is a tendency to feel trapped when everything is melting down without regard to fundamentals or valuation. Once you hit that sell button, it helps you recognize that you are in control. You can dump a stock that is driving you crazy and then buy it back if you like. You are in control of the situation.
The second reason for doing this is related to the first -- it helps you to overcome inertia. Once you make one sale, the next one isn't nearly as hard. Quite often, traders will feel frozen when faced with a market like this. They are petrified that they will sell at the exact low, and stocks will go straight back up. So they just sit there and do nothing.
If you are racking up losses right now, there will be many ways to recover. The key is to have some cash and maintain some flexibility. If you feel trapped or frozen, then you lose the ability to move aggressively as conditions develop.
Selling something has a very powerful psychological impact on traders. You can buy back the stock that you sold, but the process of selling will have a positive effect on your emotions, and that will make it easier to navigate the very difficult market.
