How to Play Toyota Now as the EV Space Heats Up

The shares have been in an uptrend from 1985. Yep, 1985.

Stocks quotes in this article: TM

Toyota Motor  ( TM) is a world-wide recognized brand in the automotive industry. Odds are many Real Money readers have owned a Toyota through the years.

Starting with the Prius, Toyota has committed themselves to be a leader in the move from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EVs). Let's check out some charts to see if this could actually work out in the long run.

In the daily bar chart of TM, below, I can see that the shares have been trading sideways since September. Trading volume has increased since the beginning of the year. Prices have rallied above the rising 50-day moving average line and above the 200-day line. The chart shows us a number of price gaps but this is an ADR and the liquid market for shares of the automaker are in Tokyo and fourteen hours away. These gaps in the ADR are for the most part not meaningful.

The daily On-Balance-Volume (OBV) line looks like it has bottomed in April. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) oscillator is bullish now.

In this weekly Japanese candlestick chart of TM, below, I can see an improving picture. Notice the large lower shadow below $140 two week ago? This shows me that traders have rejected the lows. Prices are trading above the 40-week moving average line.

The weekly OBV line may have made a low in April after a long decline. The MACD oscillator turned up in October and is not far below the zero line now.

In this long-term chart of TM, below, I can see that prices have been in an uptrend from 1985. The $135 area looks like a major support zone and prior resistance.

In this daily Point and Figure chart of TM, below, I can see a potential upside price target in the $162 area.

In this weekly Point and Figure chart of TM, below, I can see a price target in the $165 area.

Bottom-line strategy: Traders could go long TM at current levels and add to longs on a move above $150. Risk below $140 for now. My first target is $165 for now but TM could be a big long-term investment if they dominate the EV market in the years ahead. You never know.
