Insurance giant and Dow Jones Industrial Average component Travelers Companies ( TRV) is scheduled to report its latest earnings figures Thursday morning. Let's check out the charts and indicators.
In this daily bar chart of TRV, below, we can see that prices made a high in late March and turned lower. Prices have weakened in July when the broad market averages have shown some improvement. TRV trades below the declining 50-day moving average line and below the cresting 200-day line. The On-Balance-Volume (OBV) line shows weakness from late October. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) oscillator is in a bearish alignment below the zero-line.
In this weekly Japanese candlestick chart of TRV, below, we see a weak chart picture. Prices trade below the declining 40-week moving average line. The two most recent weekly candles could be a bullish harami pattern, but we do not have bullish confirmation. The weekly OBV line shows weakness from March. The MACD oscillator is pointed down and in the process of breaking below the zero-line.
In this daily Point and Figure chart of TRV, below, we can see a potential downside price target in the $139 area.
In this weekly Point and Figure chart of TRV, below, we can see a downside price target of $137.
Bottom line strategy: I have no special knowledge of what TRV could report to shareholders Thursday. TRV could make a rebound rally, but the overall sense I get from the charts is that further declines are possible. Avoid the long side.
