Recent commercials for Capital One Financial Corp. (
COF) are pretty memorable with actors and athletes such as John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Jennifer Garner and Willie Nelson. Tuesday morning these personalities are getting upstaged by investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (
BRK.A) (
BRK.B) investing $954 million in the firm in the first quarter, according to
Berkshire's latest 13F filing.
Let's check out the charts and indicators with the knowledge that the shares are up about 5% in early trading Tuesday.
In the daily bar chart of COF, below, I can see that the shares have worked lower the past 12 months. The shares are trading below the declining 50-day moving average line and below the declining 200-day line. We could see the 50-day line tested and broken today.
The On-Balance-Volume (OBV) line made a low in March and a slightly higher low in May. The 12-day price momentum study in the lower panel shows me a bullish divergence with a low in March and a higher low in May. A bullish divergence with price momentum can foreshadow a rally sometimes.
In the weekly Japanese candlestick chart of COF, below, I see a mixed picture. The shares are in a longer-term decline and trades below the declining 40-week moving average line.
The weekly OBV line shows a rise from December telling me that buyers of COF have been more aggressive than sellers. Berkshire? The MACD oscillator is below the zero line but close to a turn to the upside.
In this daily Point and Figure chart of COF, below, I can see that the shares met a downside price target in the $88 area.
In this weekly Point and Figure chart of COF, below, I can see a potential downside price target in the $51 area. COF is going to rally Tuesday but I am not sure at what price this chart will turn bullish.
Bottom-line strategy: A lot of investors want to be like Warren Buffett and some of them will no doubt buy shares of COF. The stock is still in a downtrend and strength above $100 is going to be needed to turn me bullish.
