Previously, Passeri was a leveraged finance reporter at Debtwire. Before that, he was an award-winning editor and reporter for Hersam Acorn Newspapers, a publisher of local newspapers across Connecticut and New York. Passeri earned recognition from the New England Newspaper & Press Association (NENPA) for his coverage of the development and construction of the Fairifeld Metro train station in 2011. He was also named NENPA's 2012 "Rookie of the Year."

He earned a BA in economics from Fordham University and a MA in business reporting from Columbia Journalism School.
