U.S. stocks couldn't maintain early highs and finished mixed on Thursday. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 moved fractionally higher, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.35%.
Telecom and consumer-staples names led the way higher on the session, while health care stocks lagged. Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar index gained 0.5% on Thursday. Natural gas futures also gained more than 2%.
Joy Global (JOY) was the big loser of the session, falling more than 14%. The company cut its profit guidance. On the other hand, SunEdison (SUNE) gained more than 10% after pumping up its cash-flow outlook.
In after-hours action, Verifone (PAY) fell 5% after posting quarterly results. Infoblox (BLOX) is up 9% after announcing results.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, the August jobs data dominate the economic front. The consensus analyst estimates calls for the addition of 217,000 non-farm payrolls and for the unemployment rate to tick lower to 5.2%.
