Tuesday was another volatile day for the broader U.S. stock market averages, which closed with fractional losses. On the other hand, the Russell 2000 index gained fractionally for the second straight session. Utility names led the way lower, while energy and materials stocks rallied on the day.
Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar index (DXY) fell more than 1.4% and the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note gained 8.3 basis points, to 2.262%. Crude oil also gained 1.8% on Tuesday.
In after-hours action, G-III Apparel (GIII) is trading 6% higher after posting better-than-expected quarterly results.
Looking ahead to Wednesday morning, Brown-Forman (BF.B) and Vera Bradley (VRA) headline the earnings calendar.
