U.S. futures were all declining, along with most of the world's markets Thursday, a day after the release of Fed minutes that put the possibility of a June rate hike back on the table. Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures were down 0.2% each while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 0.1% lower premarket.
The Shanghai Composite and Nikkei closed trading basically even and the Hang Seng dropped 0.7%. In Europe, the CAC 40 was 0.2% lower, the DAX falling 0.5% and the FTSE 100 down 1.0% with about three hours left in trading.
Also in the news was the disappearance of an EgyptAir flight traveling from Paris to Cairo. The jet, which was carrying 66 passengers, was 10 miles into Egyptian airspace when it went missing.
Crude prices also took a hit Thursday morning, with industry-standard Brent crude for July delivery falling $1.05 to $47.88 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate crude dropping $0.84 to $47.35 per barrel.
Shares of Monsanto (MON) were rising nearly 8% premarket following reports that German firm Bayer (BAYRY) has made an offer to buy the U.S. agribusiness company. Bayer shares were down about 8% premarket following the news.
Wal-Mart (WMT) shares were also up 8% premarket following its latest earnings release. The retailer reported earnings per share of $0.98 in the quarter ended April 29, a dime better than Wall Street was expecting for the period. Same-store sales in the U.S. increased 1%, year over year, in the quarter, leading to revenue of $115.9 billion. Analysts were expecting revenue of $112.67 billion.
Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) shares were up slightly after the retailer reported EPS of $0.50 in the April quarter, a penny better than estimates, on revenue of $1.66 billion that was in line with analyst estimates. The sports retailer provided full-year earnings guidance between $2.60 and $2.90 per share.
Lastly, Tesla Motors (TSLA) announced that it will be issuing $1.4 billion in new stock in an effort to help accelerate the production of its economy Model 3 vehicle. The Model 3 is scheduled to be available to the public by the end of 2017 and the vehicle has already received about 375,000 pre-orders.
