Thursday was a ho-hum session for U.S. stocks, ahead of monthly options expiration. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posted fractional losses. Consumer and financial names were the only groups that moved higher, while utility stocks fell. Elsewhere, the U.S. dollar index fell 0.7%.
Two IPOs were among the big winners today. Etsy (ETSY) and Party City (PRTY) gained 87% and 22%, respectively, in their first days of trading. Netflix (NFLX) was the big earnings winner of the session, moving 18% higher.
In after-hours action, ServiceNow (NOW) is down about 9%, as management guided below consensus expectations. On the other hand, Mattel (MAT) is up 7%, after posting a narrower-than-expected quarterly loss.
Looking ahead to Friday, General Electric (GE) and Honeywell (HON) headline the earnings calendar. On the economic front, we'll get a look at consumer prices before the opening bell. Economists are expecting 0.3% headline growth and 0.2% growth, excluding food and energy.
