BBBY recently reported $1.21 in quarterly earnings per share vs. $1.17 a year earlier. Overall margins were in line with expectations, while cash-flow margins fell slightly less than expected. SG&A expenses also remained in check. Analysts' consensus estimate had been for $1.22 EPS, and guidance had been in the $1.18-to-$1.23 range. But Bed Bath & Beyond delivered weak same-stores sales growth of just 0.7%. That's the weakest gain in five quarters, as well as the second-softest reading this decade. (Note:

TJX, a well-managed company but not an inexpensive stock, showed margin stability despite all of the problems facing apparel. With all eyes upon it, Wal-Mart marginally improved gross margins. WMT also improved the margin gap on a year-over-year basis. Home Depot, which admittedly operates in a strong retail subsector, showed record third-quarter operating margins. The company looked like Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes over Sham in 1973. Retail investors are attracted to strong margins like bees to honey -- and when combined with low valuations, the results can be fruitful for investors.
