Last week was a tough one, as anyone affected by Hurricane Sandy would know. Power outages, gas shortages and long lines at the pump made the headlines, as did the shortened trading week in the U.S. market.

This aside, and turning to the market, it was a mixed week in terms of the earnings reports and economic data releases. The same held true for the three major market indices, as the S&P 500 finished the compressed trading week up modestly, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite Index both fell slightly. Even the turnout for Apple's (AAPL) iPad mini launch was mixed, with some stores sporting crowds while others saw modest lines

Friday's October employment report, the last major piece of economic data that we'll receive ahead of Election Day this Tuesday, came in mixed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payrolls grew at a faster pace than what anyone had forecasted, but the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% from 7.8% in September.

Below the headlines, the October data showed a dip in hours worked and hourly wages. Adding to the mixed aspect of October job creation, Challenger Gray's Job Cuts Report for October showed a 41% increase in announced job cuts compared with those of September. There are also growing rumors and innuendo surrounding the possibility of additional job cuts should the fiscal cliff materialize, and the potential sequestration result of automatic defense and spending cuts. I think I can safely say that most investors and traders would like to see stronger job creation, along with improving wages and disposable income.

In addition to the fiscal cliff, a number of uncertainties affecting companies, investors and consumers have been bandied about the last few months. Well, this week we should start to see a greater sense of certainty as we learn the outcome of the 2012 U.S. presidential election. Like it or not -- good or bad, depending on your politics -- we will soon find out which candidate will be the next President of the United States. Given how close the race is trending, I suspect that many traders will be sitting on the sidelines until after the election's results are known, rather than risk getting whipsawed.

Based on the election results, we'll start to get a clearer picture on those other uncertainties -- the fiscal cliff, whether Obama's healthcare reform bill is likely to stay intact, tax reform and so on. These have all been an overhang for the market, investors and companies.

While the election will take center stage this week, corporate earnings continue, even though they will likely be lost in the election hoopla. We're still due to hear from some key technology companies this week, including Qualcomm (QCOM). However, we'll also start to see a shift toward retail companies like Macy's (M), Nordstrom (JWN) and Kohl's (KSS). With only 50 days left until Christmas, the outlooks offered by those companies will be critical in sizing up the health of the year-end holiday spending.

Also this week, we'll get a better sense as to how consumers are spending what disposable income they have as companies like Medifast (MED), Live Nation (LYV), Lions Gate (LGF) and others report their quarterly results and update their respective outlooks.

Here's a more granular look at what investors should be watching and listening to over the next five trading days.
