Obama Says Little to Help Small Business

People keep asking me about the president's plan to create jobs. Here's how I feel about it. I have started five businesses in my life. Three have been successful. Two have failed. I am not going to go over the winners and losers, because that's just trumpeting success as well as heralding failure, and that's got nothing to do with the president's view.

Here is what does matter. I never gave a hoot about taxes, payroll or otherwise. That was never what it was about. It is rarely what small-business people -- and that's me, believe me -- think about. They think about ideas, they think about opportunity, they think about making big money, they think about independence, independence from working for someone else.

That's what drives small business.

Small business is all these politicians ever talk about. I often wonder if they have ever started or worked at a small business. They tend not to know jack about it.

I didn't give a rat's butt about the government when it came to any of those goals. I did want it to stay out of the way if possible, but I knew that was going to be impossible. I accepted that. My most recent start-up, an inn, has very heavy government intervention. That's been a bummer. But we are dealing with safety issues. Hard to not justify that intervention, given the outrages we have seen about fire and security in the business. We've had some tax issues. We have had taxes cut back, but that's because we wanted fairness, not arbitrary decisions that didn't make any sense. We didn't get any favorable treatment, we did get some consistency. Nobody really fought us. They wanted us to win. They wanted us to create jobs. They got it.

So I say, who cares about this stuff? It doesn't motivate business creation. It doesn't give much money to the workers, who tend to be in it to win, too -- not get a few dollars more back from the government.

That's why I think it is a bit of a yawner. Sure, we want everyone to have a little more money after the paycheck.

I don't fight that. I embrace it.

But all of this nonsense about helping small business?

Give me a break.
