Last week we waded deeper into the June-quarter reports and, much like the last few earnings seasons, this one is shaping up to look like a mixed bag. For the 104 second-quarter reports already issued, 72% of earnings numbers and 50% of sales figures were above the mean analyst estimate, according to FactSet.

The earnings strength has thus far stemmed from the financial sector, with fitting examples in JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Citigroup (C). Technology, meanwhile, has been a disappointment, as seen in weaker-than-expected results from Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) and others. Elsewhere, General Electric (GE) issued mixed quarterly results Friday, though its backlog and margin-improvement forecast kindled hopes for better performance in the second half of 2013.

Also last week, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke delivered congressional testimony that signaled the central bank is unlikely to begin to taper quantitative easing before December. Bernanke also warned about slowing global growth and its potential impact on the U.S. economy. Those remarks will have investors closely watching upcoming economic data, which are set to include not only the latest domestic housing-market numbers but also flash purchasing manager index readings for China, the eurozone and the U.S. Later in the week, we'll also get the June figures for durable orders.

But the real meat will be in corporate earnings: More than 1,100 earnings reports are on tap for this week -- up from some 393 last week -- along with more than 700 related webcasts. While the rear view mirror view will be key here, we can't ignore future guidance. So far, out of the third-quarter guidance numbers that have been issued, we've seen 14 negative predictions against three positive ones, according to FactSet. Granted, earnings reports will pick up significantly this week, but this ratio does bear watching.

Given sharp increase in the number of earnings reports this week, it's bound to be a "shoot first, ask questions later" environment. That could lead to some long-term buying opportunities, particularly when it comes to overdone reactions on modest earnings misses. It also means there will be no shortage of information to plug in to your investing mosaic.

As I get ready to rumble for the next five days, here are some of the reports that I'll be watching closely: McDonald's (MCD), Apple (AAPL), DuPont (DD), Paccar(PCAR), UPS (UPS), ARM Holdings (ARMH), Facebook (FB), Ford Motor (F), Lumber Liquidators  (LL), PepsiCo (PEP), Qualcomm (QCOM), Ryland Group (RYL), Visa (V), Amazon.com (AMZN), Colgate-Palmolive (CL), Dow Chemical (DOW), Hershey (HSY), Starbucks (SBUX), Starwood Hotels (HOT), Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) and Weyerhaeuser (WY).

As you can see, that list isn't very short -- and it represents a fraction of what will be coming at us in the days ahead. Here's a larger list of what's on tap this week.
