One might think that, after last week's torrent of more than 1,100 reporting companies, things might get a little easier this week.

Nope.

While there may be a scooch fewer companies reporting earnings this week -- the number totals about 950 -- that modest reprieve will be offset by a jump in economic data. We'll see a number of indicators hit the tape on the health of the domestic economy, with data on personal income and spending, construction spending, factory orders and the health of the manufacturing economy. Also coming our way will be April employment report from the Labor Department, as well as some key data for China and the eurozone.

On Friday, the advance estimate on gross domestic product growth came in at 2.5% for the first quarter, fueled by inventory restocking and the American consumer. The continued health of the consumer and their ability to spend will be start to take center stage on the earnings front this week, with restaurant companies like Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), DineEquity (DINE), Denny's (DENN), Domino's Pizza (DPZ) and Texas Roadhouse (TXRH) due to report. Also on the docket are higher-end steakhouses Ruth's Chris (RUTH) and Del Frisco's (DFRG).

Aside from these restaurant names' commentary on traffic and average ticket, investors will be watching the all-important food-cost line in order to gauge how these companies have dealt with higher food prices in the past quarter, and how they'll address the issue in the months ahead. Another aspect of the consumer's ability to spend -- travel and leisure -- will be under the microscope when Hyatt Hotels (H), Starwood Hotels & Resorts (HOT), Marriott International (MAR) and Caesars Entertainment (CZR) share their quarterly results. MasterCard (MA) and Visa (V) results are also on tap.

Last week witnessed a number of favorable reports from farm- and agriculture-related concerns. This week we'll find out if the rosy outlook has translated into better tidings for the agriculture-equipment companies when AGCO (AGCO) and CNH (CNH) issue guidance.

Shifting from the farm to the Internet, several key players -- LinkedIn (LNKD), OpenTable (OPEN) and Facebook (FB) -- are set to release their first-quarter numbers in the coming days. In recent months, Facebook has made strides toward expanding its mobile footprint, and now we'll start to see if consumer adoption is living up to the management team's expectations.

Turning back to the broader economy, heavy truck demand is one measure of activity that I've watched closely over the years -- and, in that vein, we'll get some updates from Eaton (ETN), Meritor (MTOR) and Oshkosh Truck (OSK). We'll also hear from key rail-related outfits this week, Genesee & Wyoming (GWR) and Trinity Industries (TRN). So far in 2013, the outlook for rail has been spotty due to the modest decline in rail traffic: North American volume has sunk 0.9% from a year earlier to 5,896,891 carloads, according to the 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads.

That's a small sampling of what's in store in the week ahead. Here's a more detailed list:
