Despite Friday's move higher, all of the major stock market indices closed last week not only in the red, but they lost more than 2% across the board. The combination of tepid economic data and questionable earnings led to the pullback, marking one of the worst weeks for Mr. Stock Market so far this year.

The ante will be upped this week as corporate earnings goes from a swell to a full-out deluge. More than 1,100 companies are set to report their quarterly numbers over the next five days, and more than 750 webcasts are scheduled. That's daunting for even the best investor, whether individual or institutional, and it will be quite the challenge to put all of these results and corresponding data points into context soon after they hit the tape.

As I was putting together the weekly list of companies reporting their quarterly results, I was struck by the broadness of the list in terms of industries, vertical or whatever you want to call it. Much will be had on mobile this week. Not only are we due to see the much-anticipated results from Apple (AAPL) -- iPhone shipments and margins will be the thing to watch -- but we'll also have earnings from key suppliers like Qualcomm (QCOM), Broadcom (BRCM), ARM Holdings (ARMH) and Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), among others.

There will be no shortage of industrial names, either: Among those scheduled to report are Caterpillar (CAT), Ingersoll-Rand (IR), 3M (MMM), Dow Chemical (DOW) and Idex (IEX). Given recent data pointing to slower economic growth across the globe, commentary from these companies will be watched closely as market-watchers attempt to determine which end markets and geographic ones are better-positioned. Two of the brighter spots in the economy have been in housing and automotive, and we'll hear not only from Ford (F) this week, but also a number of key suppliers -- such as Johnson Controls (JCI) and BorgWarner (BWA) -- and several homebuilders, like Pulte (PHM) and D.R. Horton (DHI).

The health of the consumer is a big topic, and a key concern of mine. Hundreds of company results are set to be shared this week, so we'll be getting more than a few that pertain to the consumer -- Coach (COH), Hanesbrands (HBI), The Cheesecake Factory (CAKE), Proctor & Gamble (PG), Whirlpool (WHR), Cabela's (CAB), Starbucks (SBUX) and Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN), to name just a few.

Luckily, the flow of economic news will be far slower in the coming five days, with the only major data coming on the domestic housing market. Last week we learned that housing starts continued to climb in March, but that the mix favors multi-family over single-family housing. We'll have more on the housing market this week when we get the March figures for both existing-home sales (Monday) and new home sales (Tuesday). Aside from those, the data point that I'll be watching will be durable orders (Wednesday), given the bumpiness in the core capital goods line over the last few months. Keep in mind that the durable-orders data will be for March, meaning it will have been recorded before sequestration-related cuts.

Those 20-plus companies I mentioned in the above paragraphs are a drop in the proverbial bucket, so be sure to check below for a more detailed list of companies due to report their earnings this week. Be sure to have your shopping lists ready, as well as the reasons why you like a company. Should those reasons be challenged or proved no longer valid, be ready to either book profits or limit losses.
