The final results for the 2013 Gad winning value portfolio are in.

The market had a very good year with the S&P 500 up over 30% in 2013. Clearly, the Value Portfolio benefited from that rising tide. Still, the unique characteristics of this portfolio, holding only 10 equally weighted securities for the single year without selling them, illustrates how proper concentration and diversification can deliver market-beating results.

The 2013 Gad winning value portfolio is up 56.6% vs. around 27.0% for both the S&P 500 and the Wilshire 5000. Without a doubt, a rising tide lifts all boats, and anytime a market is up 27%, even a monkey throwing darts can do quite well.

This year could be a litmus test for stock picking. Already, the optimistic mood in the air calls for another bullish year in the U.S. With interest rates remaining low and investor confidence coming back, that could be the case. Again, the 2014 members of the winning value portfolio will hopefully pass muster in any market environment.

For those of you who took a deserved break from the stock market last week, below is the 2014 class again for your perusal.

I'll check in on it at the end of the month. Between then and now, I'll dig deeper into some of the names and whey they were selected.

Have a prosperous and pleasant 2014.
